It's Tipsy Tuesday!

DON'T SAY IT....

Zip it -- or Facebook will zip you!

You may have noticed fewer memes asking you to share your support of (pick one: abused animals, veterans, disabled children, homeless people).  These entities haven't decreased in numbers; Facebook has decreased their reach.  Facebook will bury posts that include "engagement bait."

Facebook has made a commitment to all users to prevent spammy and duplicate posts from showing up in their feed.

We all know that FB took the axe to click bait a few years back, but now they've added three more no-no words:  like, comment, & share.  When Facebook's AI bots see these words in your post, they will automatically assume that you are trolling for followers, and they will shut the post down.

SEE FOR YOURSELF...

Facebook prioritizes videos, right?  I recently ran an A/B test on a short demonstration video.  The caption for the A audience said "Share this amazing technique with your friends."  The caption for the B audience said "I love this technique."

The results?

The A post reached 31 accounts, received 2 reactions, and 0 shares.

The B post reached 2150 accounts, received over 100 reactions, and had over 100 shares.

Do you think AI caught the word "share" in my post caption?  You bet they did!

Give it a try with one of your posts -- and let me know how it turns out for you!

So, What's the Solution?

The solution is quite simple, really.  Avoid four words: click, like, comment, and share.

Our customers are savvy.  We don't have to say "click this link."  They can see the hyperlink and will know to click on it.

Adjust your call-to-action statements to avoid the other 3 terms.  Use phrases and questions, such as:

  • Tell us what you think...

  • Which do you prefer...

  • Let us know how you feel about...

  • Give us some feedback about...

  • Invite your friends to...

  • Spread the love...

  • The more, the merrier...

  • Help us to...

  • Who does this remind you of?

  • Who needs a little help?

  • Who needs a stashbuster?

Asking open-ended questions will get the conversations going.  Comments and shares are more valuable to you than likes and reactions.

Remember, this is an algorithm feature for Facebook -- other platforms, such as Twitter actually want you to ask your followers to share (retweet).
