Sorry, not sorry

Have you ever arrived at a place of business, only to find it closed, when the posted hours said it was open???  How frustrating! How likely are you to return to that business in the future?  More important, what will you tell your friends about your experience?

This experience is repeated over and over again when Facebook business accounts do not respond to Messenger messages.  Are you guilty of appearing closed when your posted hours say that you are open???

Facebook Messenger & how it impacts your FB algorithm

The Facebook Messenger app is free, and it's always open.  If you have Messenger incorporated with your Facebook business page, Messenger assumes that you are always open -- 24 hours/day -- unless you tell it otherwise.

And even if you tell it otherwise, Facebook will hold it against you if you don't respond to the messages in a timely manner.

How does that work???

Facebook has crafted an algorithm which controls the amount of organic (not paid/free) reach that you achieve with your Facebook business account.  The more responsive you are, the higher your reach.  The less responsive you are, the lower your reach.

Check your Messenger Insights

You can use Meta Business Suite on your phone or your desktop to review your messaging responsiveness.  The responsiveness rate is reported using the past seven days of data.  Record your responsiveness and keep track of your data.

The account, left, has good responsiveness, but could be better.  The account, right, has lower percentage of responsiveness, but responds more quickly.  Which responsiveness rate will Facebook reward? (The account on the right is closest to earning the Facebook Responsiveness badg.

The highest level of messaging responsiveness is Very responsive to messages.  When your account responds to 90% or more of your messages in 15 minutes or less (in the last 7 days), Facebook will designate you Very responsive to messages.  When your page earns this badge, everyone can see it.  When your page has not earned the page, only account managers can see your Message Responsiveness data.

Once your Messenger badge turns green.  You need to work to keep it green.  The green badge will impact the algorithm that determines your organic reach.

What can you do

To improve your message responsiveness,

  1. Turn on notifications.

  2. Use automated responses.

  3. Mark messages.  Messages in your SPAM and DONE folder no longer count against your responsiveness rate.

  4. Use away status and message.  Messages you receive while you are AWAY will not count against your responsiveness rate.

  5. RESPOND TO MESSAGES

  6. If you are not going to reply to message, then turn off Messenger for your account.
