It's Tipsy Tuesday!

Social Media Paid Verification is On the Rise...

Verifying social media accounts began over a decade ago when Twitter announced account verification to reduce fake accounts on the platform.  But spammers will be spammers, and soon fake accounts were able to be verified through the "pay to verify" system.

In November last year, Twitter announced a revised verification process, increasing the price for verification from $5/month to $8 or more/month.

This month, Meta announced a similar verification process for $11.99/month which will provide verified Facebook and Instagram users a BLUE checkmark.

What's the Advantage of a Verified Account?

Meta promises that Meta Verified accounts will have increased visibility in the feed, increased monitoring and customer service, and undefined features that will improve expression (not sure what this means...).

What are the Concerns?

Instagram users who were previously encouraged to verify their accounts complain of difficulty reaching customer service to report fake accounts.

Have you ever tried to reach out to Facebook customer service?  It's hard to imagine that $11.99 will provide better access.

These new subscription services are an overt "pay-to-play" marketing strategy.  By promising increased visibility in the newsfeed, Meta and other platforms are attempting to generate greater income without proving increased visibility.

So What Should You Do?

Nothing, yet.  Meta is rolling out Meta Verified in Australia and New Zealand first.  It is planned to roll out in the US next.

At this time, Business accounts are not eligible to apply for Meta Verified yet, but it is likely an announcement will be made soon.

When Meta sends notification that Business accounts are eligible to apply, SIT BACK AND WAIT.  Unless you have been the target of fake accounts aimed at destroying your brand or stealing your customers, Meta Verified does not offer any immediate benefit for you.  Sit back and wait.  Analyze Business account reaction.  Make your decision based on the advice of social media industry experts.

What Happened to the A/B Testing E-Blog Scheduled for Today?

The information on Meta Verified is hot off the press.  I chose to pre-empt the A/B Testing blog that I had previewed last week, because I want to help you protect your resources.  Many people rely on Facebook to tell them what they should, and shouldn't do.  As I have explained before, Facebook makes recommendations that are in FACEBOOK's best interest -- not always necessary or in YOUR best interest.  The A/B Testing e-blog will come out next week.

I'll keep you posted as I learn more about Meta Verified.
