TO HASH, OR NOT TO HASH...

That is the question! or, it would have been the question, if Hamlet had used social media.

For many in our industry, hashtags are a bit of a mystery.  Most quilt retailers know that hashtags are a way to increase social reach and engagement, but few really understand how and when to use hashtags.

Hashtags are very useful on Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and TikTok where they are hyperlinked to allow followers to find similar content.

On Facebook, use your branded hashtag to promote your brand and remind your followers to do the same when posting about your products. Facebook hashtags also make your posts searchable, so consider using hashtags that might be frequently searched (like #blockofthemonth or #quiltalong or #opensew).

Instagram, by far, is the platform that will have the best response to hashtags.  With 95 million posts per day, hashtags increase your odds of having your post seen.

Hashtags -- the WHAT and WHERE

  • Choose hashtags that are relevant to the quilt industry

  • Look at hashtags others are using (but don't be tricked into over-tagging)

  • Place your hashtag after your content or caption

  • Do not insert #hashtags in the middle of a sentence or caption

  • Create one or two branded hashtags to promote your brand

These are general guidelines.  Each platform has recommended guidelines for hashtag use.

#DON'T #OVERUSE #HASHTAGS

If one hashtag is good, twenty is better, right?  Wrong.  Overusing hashtags can actually HURT your reach and ineraction rate.  So stop building a wall of hashtags on your posts!

Focusing on the quilt industry's Big Four social media platforms, the recommendation for optimum hashtag use varies.  Note that all recommendations are siginificantly LESS than the number of tags allowed.

Facebook:  1-2 (no limit)
Instagram: 3-5 (allows 30)
Pinterest: 2-5 (allows 20)
YouTube: 3-5 (allows 15)

Remember -- your best chance of having HIGH ENGAGEMENT comes from writing great copy -- not from adding hashtags!  The combination of good copy and well-chosen hashtags is a 1-2 punch for your social media!!
