In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, quilt shop owners are finding new and creative ways to connect with their audience. One powerful tool in the content creator's arsenal is the humble or humorous meme. Memes have become a language of their own, providing a unique and engaging way to communicate with followers. In this blog, I'll explore the purpose of sharing memes to gain more followers and discuss the proper etiquette for sharing memes from other business pages.

The Art of Memes: A Key to Engaging Content

Memes have taken the internet by storm, and for a good reason – they're relatable, shareable, and have the potential to go viral. As a quilt shop owner, incorporating memes into your social media strategy can help you:

1.  Build a Sense of Community

Memes tap into shared experiences and humor, creating a sense of community among your followers. When your audience relates to your content, they are more likely to engage, share, and feel a connection to your brand.

Sorry about the small print, but I wanted to show that this information is current, posted 5 days ago, with 1.2K Reactions, 136 Comments and 685 Shares.  I have experienced a high level of interaction on all of my memes, resulting in a stronger sense of community among my followers and new followers.

2. Boost Engagement

Memes are inherently shareable, making them an excellent way to increase engagement on your social media platforms. When followers share your memes, your shop gains visibility among their network, potentially reaching new audiences.

These are stats from a meme posted in the past 2 weeks.  But these are not the highest stats I've seen from a meme.  In November, I posted a meme that performed exceedingly well, leading to an infusion of new followers (see #3 below).

3. Increase Followers Without Paying for Advertising or Boosted Posts

Memes, with their dynamic and shareable nature, have proven to be a powerful catalyst for increasing followers.  By harnessing their viral potential, increasing engagement, and appealing to a broader audience, memes become a valuable tool in your social media toolkit for acquiring and retaining followers. So, don't underestimate the power of a well-crafted meme – it might just be the key to unlocking a whole new world of followers for your quilt shop.  Of course, responding to comments and shares can be increasingly difficult with a viral post -- but that's a great problem to have!

Yes, this is real data.  By implementing a regular meme strategy, I have gained 1601 Facebook followers in two months -- a 56% increase for Stitchin' Tree with NO boosted posts or advertisements.

Sharing Memes Ethically

While memes are a fantastic tool for engagement, it's essential to approach meme-sharing with respect and ethics. Here are some guidelines for sharing memes from other business pages:

  1. Observe Copyright and Fair Use: Be mindful of copyright laws when sharing memes. Ensure that the meme is shareable (does the post have a share button?), and if in doubt, reach out to the creator for permission. Understanding fair use principles can also guide you in using content ethically.  It is NOT ethical to download a meme image and post it as your own creation.

  2. Give Credit Where Credit is Due: If you have been  given permission to directly post a meme created by another business, give them credit by tagging or mentioning them in your post. This not only shows respect for their content but also helps build relationships within the business community.

  3. Align with Your Brand Voice: Choose memes that align with the personality and values of your quilt shop. Avoid content that may be offensive or divisive, as it can negatively impact your brand image.

  4. Create Your Own Memes: Put your creativity to the test by crafting original memes for your quilt shop. This not only sets you apart but also establishes your brand as a source of unique and entertaining content.

The Last Word

Incorporating memes into your social media strategy can be a fun and effective way to connect with your audience and attract new followers to your quilt shop. By sharing memes responsibly and ethically, you can harness the power of humor and relatability to create a vibrant and engaged online community around your brand.

So, go ahead, embrace the meme culture, and let your quilt shop's personality shine through the power of shared laughter.
